The $899 Mac mini Sells AI It Cannot Fully Run
Apple’s new Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 and still ships 16GB, so the always-on agent pitch lands on the dearer M5 Pro.
Apple’s new Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 in the U.S., $300 above the M4 launch price, and begins arriving September 22. Pre-orders opened August 25 in 30 countries and regions.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, called the 5-inch desktop an always-on agentic device. The M6 most people will buy still opens with 16GB of unified memory and still stops at 32GB.
A 12-Core Chip in Last Year’s Cube
The shell did not change. Height is 2.0 inches, width and depth are 5.0 inches, and the M6 unit weighs 1.5 pounds. The M5 Pro unit is 1.6 pounds. Maximum continuous power stays 155W, and Apple quotes 5 dBA at idle.
Inside the M6, Apple moved from a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU to a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, two extra cores on each side. Each GPU core now has a Neural Accelerator, a first for Mac mini, and Apple added a Dual 16-core Neural Engine it says is up to twice as fast as the last generation. Memory bandwidth reaches 170GB/s. Unified memory starts at 16GB and configures to 24GB or 32GB.
Apple’s July 2026 tests, run against an M4 mini with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32GB of memory, and a 2TB SSD, claim up to 4x faster AI performance, twice the graphics and storage speed, and 40 percent faster CPU work. In LM Studio, Apple quotes up to 4.8x faster LLM prompt processing than that M4, and up to 13.5x versus an M1 mini. Excel spreadsheet work is listed at up to 1.5x versus M4 and 2.3x versus M1. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition with ray tracing is listed at up to twice the M4 mini.
Those AI numbers were not taken on the $899 configuration. The comparison M4 had 32GB and 2TB, which is the top of the M6 memory map and far above the 256GB SSD in the starter box.
$899 Buys the Same 16GB Floor
The M4 mini launched on October 29, 2024 at $599 with 16GB and a 256GB SSD, and education pricing was $499. The M4 Pro mini started at $1,399. This M6 opens at $899, and education pricing is $799. The M5 Pro mini opens at $1,699, and education pricing is $1,599.
Apple’s U.S. store lists the M6 16GB, 256GB box as the $899 start, a 16GB, 512GB box at $1,099, and a 24GB, 512GB box at $1,299. The M5 Pro start is a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB, and 512GB at $1,699. A faster 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, plus 48GB or 64GB, is a build-to-order step, and storage on that chip goes to 8TB.
STOCK MAC MINI PRICES
| Configuration | Chip | Memory / SSD | U.S. price |
|---|---|---|---|
| M4 launch, 2024 | 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU | 16GB / 256GB | $599 |
| M6 starter | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | 16GB / 256GB | $899 |
| M6 mid listing | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | 16GB / 512GB | $1,099 |
| M6 24GB listing | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | 24GB / 512GB | $1,299 |
| M5 Pro starter | 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU | 24GB / 512GB | $1,699 |
That is a $300 rise from the M4’s original sticker on both the cheap chip and the Pro chip. After spring 2026 component-price changes, the last M4 starting price sat $100 below this M6, so the new floor is not a surprise to anyone who watched the old box climb. It is still a different product than the $599 mini people keep naming.
How Much Memory Does the AI Pitch Need?
Apple’s own product page sells the mini as a platform for on-device agents, naming LM Studio Bionic, Ollama, Perplexity Personal Computer, Claude Cowork, and OpenClaw. It also names exo for running agents across a cluster of minis. Memory is soldered at checkout, and the M6 cannot pass 32GB.
On Apple silicon, the CPU and GPU share one pool, so a 16GB machine is not 16GB of model space. macOS keeps several gigabytes, and local-AI hardware guides treat about 11GB as the practical budget on a 16GB Mac. That is enough for a fast 7B or 8B model at 4-bit. It is a squeeze for the 24B to 35B class people now use as daily assistants.
WHAT LOCAL MODELS FIT
- 16GB M6: Comfortable 7B to 9B chat models; 14B work gets tight once the desktop and a long context are open.
- 24GB M6: The first tier where 14B models breathe, and some 24B to 27B builds fit if context stays short.
- 32GB M6: The ceiling on the cheap chip, and the first setup that feels like a daily 27B to 32B box.
- 64GB M5 Pro: The mini’s top, where 70B-class 4-bit models become a serious option and several agents can sit in RAM at once.
Apple’s headline LM Studio figure was measured against a 32GB M4, not the 16GB starter. Configuring 32GB on an M6 is a paid build-to-order step, and pairing it with a 2TB SSD, the storage in that test machine, costs more than the $899 computer. The $899 pitch and the 4.8x LLM chart are not the same SKU.
Some early posts described the $899 mini as a 32GB local-AI bargain. Apple’s store does not sell that machine. 32GB is optional. 16GB is the default.
The M5 Pro Carries the Local Models
The M5 Pro mini is the one Apple describes as an always-on desktop for AI agents. It uses up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU with an enhanced shader core and third-generation ray tracing. Memory bandwidth is 307GB/s, and unified memory goes to 64GB. The starter Pro chip in the store is a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU with 24GB and 512GB.
Apple’s Pro tests, run against an M2 Pro mini with a 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, 32GB, and an 8TB SSD, list up to 8.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus that M2 Pro and up to 4x versus M4 Pro. Blender ray-traced rendering is listed at up to 4.5x versus M2 Pro and 1.4x versus M4 Pro. Affinity image work is listed at up to 2.1x versus M2 Pro and 1.5x versus M4 Pro. Apple also points to Topaz Photo upscaling and large diffusion models.
That is the SKU that can hold the “even larger local AI models” line in the announcement. It is also $800 above the M6 starter before anyone touches memory, and 24GB on the Pro start is only one step above the M6’s 16GB default. Buyers who want 48GB or 64GB will pay again at the configurator, because none of this memory is added later.
Cluster Those Boxes Only on Thunderbolt 5
The port split is as sharp as the memory split. Both minis keep two USB-C ports on the front at USB 3 speeds up to 10Gb/s, plus a 3.5 mm headphone jack with high-impedance support. Both keep HDMI and Ethernet on the back. The M6 then gets three Thunderbolt 4 ports at up to 40Gb/s. The M5 Pro gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports at up to 120Gb/s.
Apple says Thunderbolt 5 lets users cluster multiple Mac mini systems to run large AI models entirely on device. The product page names exo and LM Studio Bionic for that job. The M6 cannot join that party at 120Gb/s, because it still speaks Thunderbolt 4. A second M6 on the desk is still a second 32GB ceiling, not a shared pool at Pro throughput.
Display support follows the same cut. The M6 can drive up to three external displays, with a mix that tops out around two 6K 60Hz panels plus a third 5K or 4K, or one 8K 60Hz panel plus a second display. The M5 Pro can put three 6K 60Hz panels across any mix of Thunderbolt and HDMI, and it can drive three displays from a single Thunderbolt port. Apple also added genlock over USB-C so a display and a camera, including iPhone 17 Pro, can lock timing.
Srouji Calls It an Agentic Device
Mac mini has always been our most versatile Mac. Whether it’s being used as a home computer, powering a professional studio, or as an always-on agentic device, it’s the little Mac that can do it all. Today, we’re taking this versatility even further. With a more powerful CPU and graphics, Neural Accelerators in the GPU, and higher memory bandwidth, Mac mini with M6 delivers a whole new level of AI performance. And with up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, Mac mini with M5 Pro is an ultracompact powerhouse for complex pro workflows.
Johny Srouji, chief hardware officer, Apple
The M6 half of that quote is about cores, Neural Accelerators, and bandwidth. The agentic half is the always-on line, and Apple repeats it for business deskside use. The software that is supposed to live on that desk is macOS 27, which Apple’s Singapore newsroom calls Golden Gate, with the next wave of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. macOS 27 is in public beta at beta.apple.com and is due as a free update this fall. Siri AI is in beta later this year in English first, then more languages.
Wired networking finally moved. Gigabit Ethernet is gone as the default, replaced by 2.5Gb Ethernet, with 10Gb still a paid option. Wireless now uses an Apple N1 wireless networking chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and Thread is on the spec sheet. Those are the right jacks for a box that is meant to sit on and serve a house or a small office. They do not add model capacity.
The M4 at $599 Still Haunts This Launch
The first public jolt was the sticker, not the 12-core count. Replies under the $899 notice called a $300 rise steep for what used to be Apple’s cheap desktop, and they treated the M4 mini as the machine that still feels like the deal. That reading is fair if the job is a home Mac. It is incomplete if the job is a 24/7 local agent, because that job was already starving on 16GB before Apple moved the price.
HOW THE MINI LOST ITS $599 STICKER
- October 29, 2024: Apple launches the redesigned M4 mini at $599 with 16GB and 256GB, and the M4 Pro mini at $1,399.
- Spring 2026: The $599 256GB configuration leaves the store during a broader memory and storage price rise, and later returns at a higher floor.
- August 25, 2026: Apple opens pre-orders on the M6 mini at $899 and the M5 Pro mini at $1,699, with shipments from September 22.
The M6 is a faster chip in the same quiet 5-inch box, with twice-as-fast storage, a 2.5Gb jack, Wi-Fi 7, and Neural Accelerators in the GPU. The agent Apple described, the one that keeps large local models resident and can be clustered over Thunderbolt 5, is the M5 Pro at $1,699 and up, with memory chosen at checkout. The $899 M6 is a snappier home Mac that can run small on-device models. It is not the 32GB test machine in the LM Studio chart, and it is not the clustered box in the Thunderbolt 5 sentence.
