Ed Sheeran’s New York Night Sends $1 Million to Suffolk

A private New York fundraiser for Ipswich Town’s chairman moved $1 million into Suffolk children’s charities while Sheeran’s Loop Tour fight dominated the month.

Ed Sheeran helped raise $1 million for Suffolk children at a private New York fundraiser in late September, the Lentonbrook Foundation said on October 19. The money is for a grant charity founded by Ipswich Town chairman and chief executive Mark Ashton. Former captain Matt Holland hosted an invitation-only room of club investors, then Sheeran played.

A Private New York Night Put $1 Million Into Suffolk

The foundation’s own account of the evening is small and specific. Club investors and guests from their wider networks sat for a conversation with Ashton and Sheeran, then an exclusive set, then a charity auction. Holland, now a club director, ran the room. There was no stadium, no support act, and no public ticket.

Ipswich Town posted the result the morning the foundation did.

THE NEW YORK NIGHT

  • The take: $1 million in one evening, the foundation said on October 19.
  • The date: Late September, in New York, announced weeks later.
  • The room: Invitation-only Ipswich Town investors and guests, hosted by Matt Holland.
  • The rule: The foundation said every dollar is for children and young people in Suffolk.

Ashton thanked Sheeran and the guests in the same breath, then pointed the money at the county rather than the city that hosted the plates.

Raising $1 million in one evening is an incredible achievement, and I’m hugely grateful to Ed, our guests and everyone who helped make it happen. While the event took place in New York, Suffolk was at the heart of it. We’re incredibly proud to be bringing significant new funding into the county, with every dollar dedicated to helping children and young people in our communities.

He later added that money raised thousands of miles away would now land with children in Suffolk. That is the whole design of the night. American dollars, a Suffolk grant book.

Mark Ashton Built a Grant Charity in His Father’s Name

Lentonbrook is not a concert brand and not the Ipswich Town Foundation. It is a grant-maker. The Charity Commission lists it under charity number 1212919, registered in April 2025, with a one-line purpose: grants to charities working to support underprivileged young people in Suffolk.

Ashton first talked about setting it up in late 2023. The name is his late father’s scales firm, Lentonbrook, which used a set of balanced scales as its mark. His father died in 2023. The foundation kept the old logo and treats the scales as a shorthand for fairness and a second chance. “This logo reminds me of my dad every single day,” Ashton said at the launch. “He taught me the importance of integrity and giving back.”

The every penny raised stays in Suffolk line is not a slogan added for New York. It is how the charity is built. It does not run youth clubs itself. It writes cheques to groups that already do, then asks those groups to reach further. On the county directory it describes itself as offering grants to organisations across Suffolk that work with children, younger people and families.

That is why a Manhattan auction matters in Felixstowe. The guests were not buying a night with a pop star for a national brand. They were filling a county grant pot that is still taking applications.

Why Ed Sheeran Was in That Room

Sheeran was not a hired headliner flown in for a gala. He is a Suffolk resident, a club sponsor, and a minority owner who has already played this room’s British version. He grew up in Framlingham after moving to the county at three, and he has said Suffolk and Ipswich still make him feel part of a community when big cities do not.

SHEERAN’S IPSWICH TIES

  • Hometown: He has lived in Suffolk since he was three and grew up in Framlingham.
  • Shirt deal: He has sponsored Ipswich’s shirts since 2021, when the men’s team was still in League One.
  • Ownership: In August 2024 he bought a 1.4 percent passive stake and did not join the board.
  • The box: The deal included long-term use of a personalised executive box at Portman Road.
  • The first Lentonbrook night: He played a three-song acoustic set at the charity’s launch in Dedham on July 8, 2025.

“I am really excited to have bought a small percentage of my hometown football club,” he said when the stake was announced. “It’s any football fan’s dream to be an owner of the club they support.” Ashton called the share a natural next step after three years of help from Sheeran and his team.

So the New York booking is club business as much as celebrity booking. The people in the room already had a reason to write a cheque. Sheeran gave them a reason to write a larger one, and to do it in a city where those investors already sit.

The Loop Tour Row Followed Him Into New York

The foundation announced the $1 million on October 19. By then a different Sheeran story had been running for a month, and it still drowns the Suffolk transfer if you only follow the stadium argument. The louder fight is still the Philadelphia speech. The Suffolk night barely registered beside it.

THE SEPTEMBER TOUR BREAK

  1. September 4 and 5, 2026: Macklemore opens for Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, performs “Hind’s Hall,” shows images from Gaza, and says, “I say free Palestine, I say free Lebanon, I say free Cuba, I say free Congo, free Sudan.”
  2. September 14, 2026: Messina Touring Group, promoter of the U.S. leg, takes Macklemore off remaining dates after venues say they will not host a show with him on the bill. Macklemore says Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, pressed for the removal.
  3. September 15, 2026: Sheeran writes that Macklemore coming off the tour “was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine.” Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and backing band Beoga quit the same day.
  4. September 19, 2026: Sheeran walks out alone at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, reads a prepared statement, calls Hamas’s October 7 attack “horrific,” and calls what is happening in Gaza “catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate.”
  5. Late September 2026: He performs at Ashton’s private New York fundraiser for Lentonbrook.

Finneas wrote that artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed, and that he stood with Palestine. Beoga, friends with Sheeran for over 10 years, said playing in venues that silence anyone advocating for a free Palestine was not an option. Lukas Graham said money should not decide who gets to speak. Sheeran told the Philadelphia crowd he had not known whether the tour would carry on, or whether he even wanted to be an artist, then said he looked up and saw 50,000 people who had not abandoned him.

I’ve tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics. But, this is a humanitarian issue and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore. What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.

He later apologised for opening on that note, saying families had not bought a ticket to hear it. Piers Morgan said he agreed with the outline (October 7 terrible, the Israel response disproportionate) and still wished Sheeran had not “bowed to the mob” by reading it in public. Reading a prompt in a bowl that size, after a week that blew up the tour, is a way not to flub a landmine. It is also why the clip travelled and the Suffolk cheque did not.

Felixstowe Already Has a Sensory Room From the Same Pot

The $1 million is new fuel, not a first gift. Lentonbrook is already writing small, local cheques, and the New York haul is meant to multiply that list. The foundation is still inviting applications from groups that work with underprivileged children and young people in the county.

GRANTS ALREADY ON THE GROUND

Project Place Work
Lentonbrook Sensory Room Langer Primary Academy, Felixstowe Space for extra-needs regulation and communication, opened in September
Whitton Youth Partnership Ipswich Youth activities
Green Light Trust Suffolk Woodland adventure days
Domestic abuse support West Suffolk Specialist help for young people affected by abuse
Empower Hub Ipswich Youth space, family workshops, opened 28 October 2025

Jo Morgan-Soane, headteacher at Langer Primary Academy, said the sensory room, funded with the Friends of Langer School Association, had changed how pupils with extra needs get through the day. “It enables our team to develop personalised sensory profiles, ensuring every child receives support tailored to them,” she said. Ashton opened the room himself after visiting the school.

The Empower Hub in Ipswich is the other clear picture of the model. It opened on 28 October 2025 with Ipswich Town Foundation, offering youth activities, cookery and budgeting workshops, and an outdoor space designed by young people. Ashton attended with players Harry Clarke and Dara O’Shea. That is what a Lentonbrook cheque looks like when it leaves New York: a room, a timetable, a school partnership, not a press-night.

Dedham’s First Night Raised More Than £200,000

The Manhattan format was not new. On July 8, 2025, Ashton launched Lentonbrook at the Talbooth Restaurant in Dedham, beside the River Stour, with Holland hosting an “evening with” Ashton, Sheeran and then-manager Kieran McKenna. Sheeran played three acoustic songs under pink light tied to a Welcome Home theme, donated auction lots, and posed with winning bidders. The launch sat next to his three Portman Road homecoming shows that weekend. Guests put up more than £200,000, all of it marked for Suffolk.

One auction prize later sent guest Liz Brownsell and her son Aedan on an away day with the first team, including a training-ground introduction to Ashton, McKenna and Jaden Philogene. That is the same loop the New York night used: a private room, a performance, an auction, a cheque that never leaves the county’s young people.

New York did not invent Lentonbrook. It scaled it. A year-old grant charity with a father’s logo just moved $1 million across the Atlantic, and the groups that already have a sensory room and a youth hub are first in line to ask for the next slice. Ashton said the point was a safe space, specialist support, or a chance a child might otherwise miss. Applications are open. The argument that ate September is not on the form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Lentonbrook Foundation?

It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in April 2025, with five trustees and a registered address at Birketts LLP, 141-145 Princes Street, Ipswich. It does not run services itself. It makes grants to other charities and voluntary groups that work with disadvantaged children and young people in Suffolk, and it works alongside the separate Ipswich Town Foundation.

What Is Ed Sheeran’s Stake in Ipswich Town?

Sheeran holds a 1.4 percent passive share bought in August 2024 through the club’s majority vehicle Gamechanger 20 Ltd. He is not a voting shareholder and is not on the board. The deal included long-term use of a personalised executive box at Portman Road, on top of shirt sponsorship of the men’s and women’s teams that began in 2021.

How Can Charities Apply for Lentonbrook Grants?

The foundation says it welcomes applications from charities and organisations that support underprivileged children and young people across Suffolk, and it asks groups to use lentonbrookfoundation.co.uk. Its public contact is hello@lentonbrookfoundation.co.uk. Funding is limited to that county and is meant to go through groups that already know local families.

Has the Lentonbrook Foundation Been Independently Validated?

On February 24, 2026, the foundation said it had achieved CAF International Validation, a due-diligence standard used so donors can give across borders with more confidence. That check sits on top of its Charity Commission registration and is the piece that makes a New York room a practical way to fund Suffolk grants rather than a one-off cash collection.

His decade in journalism started in reporting and moved into editing, and it left him with a short list of promises that readers can expect every article here to keep. Sources are named and linked, so a claim about a company, a government or a team can be traced to the statement, filing or transcript it came from. Dates are given in full, figures are checked against the original table before publication, and where a number is an estimate the story says whose estimate it is. Headlines describe what happened rather than tease it. Those expectations hold across all ten sections WORLDHAB publishes for an international audience: news, business, technology and science on one side, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and travel on another, with auto and gaming covered with the same seriousness.
