Rolex Made Drake the Daytona It Fights Jewelers Over

Drake posted a one-of-one Ice Gradient Daytona engraved Freeze the World, two months after Rolex won a U.S. order against diamond-altered watches.

Drake posted a one-of-one Ice Gradient Daytona on Friday night and called it the most important thing he owns. He tagged Rolex, thanked “the wonderful team” in Geneva, and put a rap line on a caseback the brand usually leaves blank.

He also told local jewelers not to copy it. That request landed two months after Rolex Watch U.S.A. left a California court with a permanent order against diamond-altered Rolex watches sold as the genuine article.

Drake Called It the Most Important Thing He Owns

The carousel went up in the small hours of August 15. Drake named the watch the “One of One Piece Unique Ice Gradient Daytona by @rolex,” made “to celebrate the record breaking milestones of 2026,” and called it “a stand alone and a part of history.”

“Today I received the most important thing I have ever had the pleasure of owning,” he wrote, thanking Rolex “for blessing me with such a generational ticker.” Rolex’s newsroom has not posted the watch, and no reference number has been published. The public record is still Drake’s post, a spec folio he photographed beside the box, and the watch on his wrist.

A separate platinum Daytona had already appeared in the “What Did I Miss” video and in the icy campaign imagery around ICEMAN. This piece is built as the marker for the whole 2026 run, not as another video prop. He asked people not to take it to a local jeweler and have it remade, which is a strange sentence to put on a gift until you look at what Rolex has been doing in court.

The Bracelet Rolex Patented and Then Gave to One Client

Factory gem-set Daytonas already exist. Rolex will sell, quietly, a white-gold Cosmograph with a bezel set with 36 brilliant-cut diamonds and a mother-of-pearl dial. Roger Federer, a longtime Rolex testimonee, wore an off-catalog white-gold Daytona last year with 36 baguette blue sapphires on the bezel, 54 diamonds on the case and lugs, and a silver obsidian dial. Those watches are rare. They are not one of one.

Drake started the video at the clasp, where the stones are clear, then rolled his wrist so the bracelet darkens into blue as it reaches the case. Watch historian Nick Gould found that Rolex patented that gradient setting in Switzerland in 2023 and filed the same idea in the United States last year. The flex is not that stones are on a Daytona. The flex is that Geneva used a patented setting on a single client’s bracelet and then put his lyric on the back.

THE ICE GRADIENT, AS SHOWN

  • The bracelet: Baguette stones run from clear diamonds at the clasp into blue sapphires at the lugs.
  • The dial: A pavé diamond face with blue baguette hour markers and sapphires on the bezel and lugs.
  • The caseback: “FREEZE THE WORLD” in blue lettering, a line from the ICEMAN track “Make Them Know.”
  • The metal: The folio Drake photographed puts the case and bracelet in white gold, with no public reference number.

Dealer Mike Nouveau, who breaks down watches for a large online audience, said in a video that it “must be the most expensive retail factory Rolex any of us have ever seen.” Rolex has not named a price. One Instagram watch account floated about $300,000, which is in the neighborhood of a series Rainbow Daytona and ignores the unique bracelet, the caseback, and the provenance. Other dealers have talked in the $1 million to $5 million range. Until the watch trades, those figures are guesses.

Rolex Spent June in Court Over Diamond-Altered Watches

Rolex does set diamonds in-house. It also spends real money stopping other people from doing it to Rolex watches and then selling them under the crown. The Ice Gradient arrived in the middle of that fight, which is why Drake’s caption reads like a legal memo as much as a thank-you note.

HOW ROLEXTREATED ICE-OUTS THIS DECADE

  1. January 26, 2024: The Fifth Circuit, in Rolex Watch USA, Inc. v. BeckerTime, treats modified Rolexes with aftermarket diamonds added as hour markers, plus aftermarket bezels and bracelets, as materially different from what Rolex sells.
  2. May 2025: Rolex Watch U.S.A. sues SDOT Watches LLC, doing business as Swiss Wrist, in the Central District of California over counterfeit and deceptively altered Rolex-branded watches, including pieces changed with diamonds.
  3. June 8, 2026: The parties enter a permanent injunction that bars Swiss Wrist from selling Rolex-branded watches with non-genuine parts and with “materially altered genuine parts,” and the order names dials and bezels altered with diamonds and other stones.
  4. August 15, 2026: Drake posts the Ice Gradient Daytona, credits Rolex with building it, and tells the public not to have a jeweler recreate it.

The California case is Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc. v. SDOT Watches LLC, 2:25-cv-03990. The order does not ban a person from owning a factory gem-set Rolex. It draws a line around aftermarket ice-outs sold as Rolex. Drake’s watch, if Geneva did set those stones, sits on the factory side of that line. The copies he is worried about would sit on the other side, which is why the caption had to say the quiet part.

What a Rolex Piece Unique Is

Rolex’s usual method of being exclusive is the off-catalog watch: a factory model that never appears on the website, offered privately to a short list of clients, often in small series. The Rainbow Daytona, with 36 baguette sapphires on the bezel, works that way. So does Federer’s sapphire-and-obsidian piece. Several examples can exist. You still cannot walk into a boutique and buy one.

A pièce unique is a further step. Drake’s caption says Rolex made this as a single watch for him. That is rarer than off-catalog, and it is rarer than the Cosmograph Daytona Rolex has designed to meet the needs of motor racing professionals since 1963, with a tachymetric bezel and, in current form, in-house calibre 4131. The Ice Gradient keeps the 40 mm Oyster shape of that racing watch and then covers the tool with stones until the tachymeter is gone.

THREE DAYTONAS, THREE KINDS OF RARE

Watch How Rolex Makes It What Is on It How Many
Rainbow Daytona (e.g. 116595RBOW) Off-catalog series 36 baguette sapphires on the bezel Multiple; examples have been listed around $448,000 and $670,000
Federer Daytona 126599TSA Off-catalog series 36 baguette blue sapphires, 54 diamonds, silver obsidian dial Multiple; shown to a private room at Watches and Wonders 2025
Ice Gradient Daytona Piece unique, per Drake Full diamond-to-sapphire bracelet, pavé dial, sapphire bezel and lugs, “FREEZE THE WORLD” caseback One, with no public reference

Rolex casebacks are blank on purpose. Collectors treat extra engraving as a warning sign of aftermarket work. Getting the factory to cut a lyric from “Make Them Know” into the steel, in blue, is the detail a series off-catalog watch does not get. Federer did not have to print a tennis slogan on the back of the 126599TSA. Drake did, because the watch is doing album work.

Iceman, Habibti and a First in Chart History

The watch is dated to a specific week. All three albums arrived on May 15. On the chart dated May 30, Drake held the top three on the Billboard 200 at once, which no artist had done since the chart began weekly publication in March 1956. ICEMAN is the 15th No. 1 of his career. That passes Jay-Z for the most among solo men and R&B/hip-hop artists and ties Taylor Swift among soloists. The Beatles remain in front, with 19.

Luminate’s figures, which feed the Billboard 200, put a hard size on the week. ICEMAN opened with 463,000 equivalent album units in the United States, the second-largest week of 2026 after BTS’s ARIRANG at 641,000, and the largest of the year for an R&B/hip-hop set. HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR, announced on a May 14 livestream the night before release, opened at 114,000 and 110,000. All three were sold only as digital downloads.

THE MAY 30 BILLBOARD 200 DEBUTS

Album Debut Units On-demand streams
ICEMAN No. 1 463,000 (449,000 from streaming, 13,000 sales, 1,000 from tracks) 462.2 million across 18 tracks
HABIBTI No. 2 114,000 (108,000 from streaming, nearly 6,000 sales) 110.63 million across 11 tracks
MAID OF HONOUR No. 3 110,000 (104,000 from streaming, 6,000 sales) 105.48 million across 14 tracks

Guns N’ Roses in 1991 and Nelly in 2004 had debuted at Nos. 1 and 2 at the same time. Nobody had opened at 1, 2, and 3. Drake now has 20 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, which is the most for a rap act, ahead of Future’s 18. The Ice Gradient is the object Rolex (on Drake’s account) built to freeze that week in metal and stone.

A $500,000 Take Care Watch Already Changed Hands

Drake has been in the Rolex business for a long time, and the secondary market already has a receipt for what his name does to a reference. Earlier this year, Florida dealer Eric Wind listed the yellow-gold GMT-Master II from the cover of Take Care, a ref. 116758SANR with 36 baguette diamonds, black sapphire hour markers, and an OVO owl cut into the caseback. Comparable examples of that off-catalog GMT trade near $100,000. Wind asked $500,000 and, on his own site, said the watch sold for its full $500,000 list price.

I think this watch without the provenance could somewhere around $100,000. The provenance, to me, probably added three to five x to the value. So that’s kind of how we settled on $500,000.

Eric Wind, dealer, Wind Vintage

On the 2024 track “It’s Up,” Drake put his own Rolex count at 143. Esquire’s watch desk treated the Ice Gradient as number 144. He has also gone the aftermarket route: a Day-Date whose President bracelet Chrome Hearts replaced with a custom design of the brand’s crosses, and a 2021 gift to Lil Baby of a custom Day-Date with a Chrome Hearts bracelet when The Voice of the Heroes hit No. 1. The man who is now telling jewelers not to recreate a Rolex has, in other years, worn Rolexes jewelers had already remade.

That history is why the Ice Gradient’s factory claim matters. If the stones were set in Geneva, the watch keeps Rolex’s warranty logic and the brand’s idea of a “genuine” part. If a jeweler copies the gradient onto a stock Daytona, it becomes the kind of object Rolex has been taking to court. Drake’s own collection already shows both versions of the same idea, which is an awkward exhibit for a brand that just spent June defining the difference.

The Line He Drew for Local Jewelers

The copy instinct around a watch like this is not theoretical. The first jokes under the reveal assumed another rapper would be at a jeweler’s bench by Monday. Drake tried to cut that off in the caption, in language that matches the June order more closely than it matches a flex.

Please do not get your local jeweler to recreate. This is a stand alone and a part of history. Thank you to the wonderful team at Rolex for blessing me with such a generational ticker.

The California injunction is the other half of that sentence. It does not read like a press release. It reads like a brand drawing a map of what may still be called a Rolex after someone has taken a tool to it.

WHAT THE JUNE 8 ORDER BARS

  • Non-genuine parts: Replacement dials, bezels, cases, movements, straps, and bands sold under the Rolex name.
  • Altered genuine parts: Authentic Rolex components that have been “materially altered,” including with diamonds and other stones.
  • The sales channel: Advertising or selling those watches as Rolex, including through the defendants’ sites and third-party marketplaces named in the suit.

Rolex can set a gradient of diamonds and sapphires on a Daytona, patent the setting, engrave a lyric, and hand the only example to Drake. A jeweler who copies that look onto another Daytona and sells it as a Rolex is, under the order Rolex just obtained, on the wrong side of the same line. The Ice Gradient is the factory version of a style the brand has spent years trying to pull off the grey market. Drake had to say so out loud, because the people watching the post already knew where they would take the photos.

Rolex’s newsroom still describes the Cosmograph Daytona as a racing chronograph with a tachymeter and a 100-metre Oyster case. The Ice Gradient is not on that page. It lives on Drake’s wrist, in a white lacquer box with a chevron lid, with “FREEZE THE WORLD” on the back, and with a caption that does the enforcement the catalog will not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Freeze the World Refer To on Drake’s Daytona?

It is a line from “Make Them Know,” a track on ICEMAN. The same song also raps about Rolex by name, with Drake talking about reserving a watch “like I’m indigenous” if he hears one is about to drop, so the caseback is quoting an album that already treated the crown as part of the lyric sheet.

How Many Songs Did Drake Put on the Hot 100 the Week Iceman Debuted?

He placed 42 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in that single week, every chart-eligible track from ICEMAN, HABIBTI, and MAID OF HONOUR, and he became the first artist to reach 400 total Hot 100 hits. Those song records sit beside the album sweep and are why the watch’s “milestones of 2026” line is doing more work than a No. 1 sticker.

Has Drake Ever Had This Many Albums on the Billboard 200 at Once?

On the May 30, 2026 chart he had 12 titles on the Billboard 200 at the same time, the first time he has done that and the first time a living soloist has placed 12 albums concurrently since the current Billboard 200 was combined into one list in August 1963. Prince in 2016 and the Beatles in 2014 are the other names on that short list, with Prince’s 19-album week still the record.

Can a Jeweler Legally Copy the Ice Gradient for a Private Client?

In Switzerland, the Federal Supreme Court ruled in January 2024 that Artisans de Genève may personalize a watch at the owner’s request for personal use, but it may not market modified watches with Rolex’s trademarks without consent. In the United States, Rolex’s June 8, 2026 injunction against Swiss Wrist targets the sale of diamond-altered Rolex-branded watches, which is the commercial copy Drake’s caption is trying to stop.

What Came in the Box With Drake’s Ice Gradient Daytona?

He photographed a bespoke white lacquer presentation case whose lid uses alternating blue and brushed-metal chevrons that echo the bracelet links, with the Rolex crown centered, plus a printed folio that shows a rendering of the watch and its specs. That kind of packaging is how Rolex treats a one-piece project rather than a production run, and it is the closest thing to paperwork the public has seen.

His decade in journalism started in reporting and moved into editing, and it left him with a short list of promises that readers can expect every article here to keep. Sources are named and linked, so a claim about a company, a government or a team can be traced to the statement, filing or transcript it came from. Dates are given in full, figures are checked against the original table before publication, and where a number is an estimate the story says whose estimate it is. Headlines describe what happened rather than tease it. Those expectations hold across all ten sections WORLDHAB publishes for an international audience: news, business, technology and science on one side, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and travel on another, with auto and gaming covered with the same seriousness.
