Apple Gives Away the Health Coach It Would Not Sell

Apple Health app now adds Health Age and free AI advice after a paid coach was dropped, crowding Whoop and Oura.

Apple will fold an Apple Intelligence coach into the Health app later this year, with no extra subscription attached. The pitch landed on September 9 beside Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, whose new Health Sensing System feeds a daily 0-10 readiness score. The foldable iPhone Duo ate the headlines. The Health app was the product that needed a sentence more than a chart.

For years the app stored heart rate, sleep, and rings and left people to guess. Screenless bands with advice-heavy apps filled that hole. Apple’s answer is not a new paid Health+ service. It is the free app, speaking in full sentences.

Apple Put a Coach in a Free App

The redesigned Health app is due later this year on Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and iPad models, starting in U.S. English. Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple’s vice president of Health and Fitness, said the company can now translate complex biometric data into clear guidance while keeping that data private. Health Age needs an Apple Watch. Some features are limited to users 18 or older.

WHAT THE REDESIGNED HEALTH APP ADDS

  • Insights tab: A summary that updates through the day across heart, sleep, readiness, fitness, vitals, and cycle data, plus a For You strip of advice and articles.
  • Longevity tab: Long-run views of heart, sleep, mood, movement, metabolism, hearing, and food, with Health Age set against calendar age using VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep, and HRV, plus optional A1c and LDL from labs.
  • Movement evaluations: At-home tests of flexibility, strength, balance, movement mechanics, and VO2 max using the iPhone camera and Apple Watch, with video kept on the device and never stored or shared.
  • Labs and lessons: A Quest blood panel ordered in the app, then videos from Apple Health clinicians that overlay a user’s own numbers, including LDL after a draw or balance work after a movement test.

That package is the coach people have been buying from other brands. Apple is putting it on the phone that already holds the records, and it is not adding a Health+ line on the bill.

At Apple, we believe technology can empower everyone with actionable, science-based insights built with privacy at the core. By combining breakthrough sensing on Apple Watch with Apple Intelligence in the Health app, we’re able to translate complex biometric data into clear guidance for users.

She added that the same stack should help people plan a given day and still see a longer arc. The software will suggest intervals on a morning run, or a calmer wind-down after a run of late nights. It will also tell Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners to Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.

The Paid Health Coach Apple Chose Not to Ship

The free app is easier to understand if you remember what did not launch. In February, Mark Gurman said Apple had scaled back the standalone health coach known inside the company as Mulberry, and would drip pieces into Health instead of opening a separate service. People inside Apple had called that service Health+. The plan had already slipped past iOS 26 and a spring window before the change.

Gurman also said services chief Eddy Cue took over the health group after Jeff Williams retired, and told colleagues Apple had to move faster. The Oakland video studio built for the coach was not thrown out. The September 9 Health app still promises clinician videos on lab results and movement scores, which is Mulberry’s lesson layer without the membership wrapper.

FROM MULBERRY TO STORE SHELVES

  1. February 5, 2026: Gurman says Mulberry will not ship as its own coach and that leftover pieces will land in the Health app over time.
  2. September 9, 2026: Apple unveils Series 12, Ultra 4, a 0-10 readiness score, and an Apple Intelligence Health app for later in the year.
  3. September 14, 2026: watchOS 27 reaches Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, paired with iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE 3 on iOS 27.
  4. September 18, 2026: Series 12, from $399, and Ultra 4, from $799, reach stores, matching last year’s starting prices.
  5. Later in 2026: The redesigned Health app opens in U.S. English, with more languages after that.

Cue’s brief to go faster did not produce a chatbot you pay for by the month. It produced scores and scripts inside an app every iPhone already has. That is a product choice with a price war hiding in it.

Whoop and Oura Built the Gap Apple Just Filled

Whoop and Oura did not win on notifications. They won because they told you what yesterday’s heart data meant before you opened a spreadsheet. Whoop still sells that as a membership around a screenless band. Oura still puts readiness behind a ring and a paid plan. Apple just put the same job in Health and left the price at zero.

The new labels sit on a map those apps already drew. Health Age does the work of a body-age score. Readiness is a recovery number with four plain phrases. Training load and vitals pick up language Whoop has used for years. Apple did not need a new membership page to ship them.

WHERE THE ADVICE LAYER NOW LIVES

Piece of the coach Apple Health, later 2026 Whoop Oura
Daily recover-or-go score Readiness 0-10 on Series 12 and Ultra 4 Yes, with membership Yes, with membership
Body-age style score Health Age, Watch required Yes Yes
Fee for the advice None Membership required Membership required
Screenless all-day wear No Yes Yes

The table is not a death notice. A ring still sleeps better on some fingers than a watch, and a band with a 14-day charge still wins for people who hate a nightly cable. The thing Apple took is the reason a lot of iPhone owners paid a second bill: someone to read the numbers. A longevity figure that used to live in clinic PDFs is now a tab in an operating system.

Readiness Stays Off Last Year’s Watches

watchOS 27 will run on Series 9, SE 3, and Ultra 2. Readiness will not. Apple tied that 0-10 score, and the denser HRV feed behind it, to the Health Sensing System on Series 12 and Ultra 4. Older watches can still pair, still close rings, and still feed Health Age once the new app arrives. They will not get Recover or Go For It on the wrist.

The hardware change is a sampling story. Series 12 and Ultra 4 measure heart rate every five seconds all day with larger green LEDs. They sample HRV as often as every five minutes, which Apple calls 24x more often than before, and they split Recovery HRV from overall HRV. Overnight vitals now judge Recovery HRV against a personal baseline. A daytime vitals view can flag a shift before bedtime.

Readiness blends recent activity, vitals, and sleep score, then updates through the day after a hard session or a swing in daytime numbers. Apple says the scoring work used the Apple Heart and Movement Study and in-house exercise scientists and physicians. That is also why last year’s watch, which already tracks HRV and sleep, is being told to wait. Apple is selling a sensor, not a software toggle.

Apple’s Own Heart Rate Study Names the Rivals

Apple did not leave the accuracy claim as a slogan. A September 2026 paper on its Health site reports a head-to-head test run in July and August against a Polar H10 chest strap. Wrist assignment was randomized. The set included Garmin Forerunner 970, Google Pixel Watch 4, Huawei Watch 5, Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, WHOOP 5, and Oura Ring 5, which Apple said covers most of the watch market plus two screenless brands.

Sessions mixed outdoor runs, treadmill intervals, cycling, HIIT, and strength work, plus a daily-living block of rest, desk work, cooking, and walking. Oura was skipped in strength work, matching the company’s own weightlifting guidance. Five sites ran the protocol, two near Cupertino plus San Diego, Austin, and Selangor, Malaysia.

THE HEART RATE STUDY IN BRIEF

  • Who counted: 1,460 people enrolled; 1,254 contributed at least one paired Apple-versus-rival reading.
  • Who they were: 35% female, mean age 39, mean BMI 26; 20% had Fitzpatrick skin tone V or VI; 59% were at third-party research sites.
  • Head-to-head: Across 159 activity-by-measure tests, Apple Watch was more accurate at a 99% confidence level in 139, 18 were a draw, and the other device won 2.
  • The fine print: Point estimates favored Apple Watch in 155 of 159, a separate tally from the confidence-level count. Pixel Watch 4 was closer at rest by under 0.5 bpm. Session-average heart rate favored Apple in 11 of 12 matchups; Huawei Watch 5 in workouts was the exception, better on the number but not statistically.

The heart rate study of 1,254 wearers is Apple’s paper, with Apple’s protocol and Apple’s devices. It is still the first time the company has put Whoop and Oura on the same chest-strap chart and published the scoreboard. Readiness and Health Age only get more confident if those beats are right. A wrong step count still poisons a pretty score.

Knitters Already Know the Watch Can Invent Steps

Desai has spent years saying Apple’s health tools should change a decision, not just fill a screen. At Stanford Medicine last year she put it as a design rule: if an insight does not lead to a behavior, a choice, or a talk with a clinician, it is noise. The new app is built to talk more. That is the tension, and it does not need a lecture to see it.

Knitters have already met the noisy version. In Apple’s own community forums, people who knit on the sofa have watched the Watch log huge step counts from wrist flicks while their feet never moved. Chefs on their feet all day have missed Stand hours because the same arm was holding a pan. A 2026 knit blogger joked that stitching had made him look like the most active person in the room. The accelerometer still thinks a looping wrist is a walk.

Sampling heart rate every five seconds will not fix a step counter that treats yarn as mileage. It will feed Readiness and Insights with more of whatever the wrist believes. People already pace the hallway at 11:30 p.m. to close a ring. A 0-10 that says Recover, then flips to Go For It after lunch, will have the same grip, only with kinder copy. The coach is useful when you can ignore it.

iOS 27 also extends Cycle Tracking into perimenopause and menopause, including a prompt for users 40 and over when logged cycles look like that shift, and a prompt to call a doctor after bleeding logged in menopause. Workout Buddy now runs on the Watch without the iPhone nearby, in English and Spanish. Those are quieter tools. They do not shout a score. They will ship in the same season as the ones that do.

A $119 Blood Draw Feeds Health Age

Health Age can swallow lab values a watch cannot see. Apple named A1c and LDL. The on-ramp is a Quest Diagnostics panel you buy in the Health app. Quest’s consumer chief, Richard Adams, said embedding the draw in Health makes testing simpler for people who want biomarker and wearable data in one place. Chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes affect as many as three in four American adults, Quest said, citing CDC figures, and can often be caught earlier with labs.

The $119 panel at about 2,000 U.S. labs covers over 50 markers aimed at cardiometabolic health and organ function, plus blood pressure, height, weight, and waist and hip measures. Third-party clinicians review the orders. At the user’s request they will walk through results at no extra charge. The offer is U.S. only and not in every state. Results land back in Health and can thicken the Longevity tab.

That is the one new charge Apple did put in the free app, and it is a lab’s bill, not Cupertino’s. Whoop and Oura already route members to similar panels. Apple’s version sits next to a readiness number that only the new watches compute and next to an AI summary that only Intelligence phones will write. The stack is free until you want blood. Then it is $119 and a drive to a patient service center.

The redesigned Health app is still dated only as later this year. watchOS 27 arrives September 14. Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach shelves September 18. Until the coach speaks, the Watch will keep counting whatever the wrist is doing, stitches included.
