AppleCare One Family Pays Off Only for Packed Houses
AppleCare One Family at $49.99 a month undercuts three Individual bills, while six shared theft claims and a four-year cap squeeze smaller homes.
AppleCare One Family will cost $49.99 a month starting September 14, covering every eligible device for up to six people in a Family Sharing group. The bill is flat. The value is not. Households already paying three or more Individual plans come out ahead; a couple on two of those plans, or one person with a short device list, will pay more for the same repairs.
Apple posted the Family tier in the United States the same week it unveiled iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Duo. Accident repairs stay unlimited, with a service fee each time. Theft and loss sit on a shared cap of six claims a year for the whole group.
Apple Puts the Whole House on One Bill
Families in the United States can cover every eligible device for six people under AppleCare One Family, which Apple priced at $49.99 a month until cancelled. The organizer plus five invited members is the same Family Sharing ceiling Apple already uses for iCloud+ and Apple Music. Each person keeps a separate Apple Account. The coverage is what changes.
Once the organizer buys the plan, eligible hardware already in the group is added at no extra charge, including most devices four years old or newer that pass a good-condition check. Headphones have a tighter gate: one year old or newer. New Apple products join on their own. A device you pull out in Settings, under General, then AppleCare & Warranty, loses cover at once.
The Family tier includes the usual AppleCare+ stack: drops and spills, liquid damage, battery replacement if capacity falls below 80 percent with no extra fee, 24/7 priority support, same-day work at Apple Stores, Express Replacement for iPhone, and access to more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers. Theft and loss apply to iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, not to Mac or AirPods.
Eight Devices Is Where Individual Stops Winning
AppleCare One Individual, launched in the United States on July 24, 2025, still exists. It is $19.99 a month for three devices on one Apple Account, then $5.99 for each extra device. It cannot reach a spouse’s or a child’s account. That account wall is the whole point of Family. The price wall is the part the launch copy skips.
On one account, Individual stays cheaper until the pile gets huge. Four devices cost $25.98 a month. Five cost $31.97. Six cost $37.96. Seven cost $43.95. Eight cost $49.94, a five-cent gap under Family. A ninth device on Individual is $55.93, and Family finally wins on the monthly rate. A single power user with a phone, a watch, a tablet, and a couple of Macs is still on the wrong side of that line.
THE MONTHLY MATH
| Plan | Monthly price | Who it covers | Device limit | Theft and loss claims |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, iPhone 18 Pro | $14.99 | One device | 1 | 2 per 12 months |
| AppleCare One Individual | $19.99 for 3 devices | One Apple Account | 3, then $5.99 each | 3 per 12 months |
| AppleCare One Family | $49.99 | Up to 6 Family Sharing members | All eligible, no add-on fee | 6 per 12 months |
Three Individual bills are $59.97 a month, $9.98 more than Family. Four Individual bills are $79.96, which is $29.97 more. That four-plan house is the buyer Apple is aiming at: two adults and two kids, each already on One. Two Individual bills are $39.98. Family would raise that couple $10.01 a month for auto-adds and a shared theft pool, which is a weak trade if the hardware list is stable.
Phone-only math flips again. Apple lists AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at $14.99 a month. Two of those phones are $29.98, cheaper than Family. Four are $59.96, $9.97 more than Family. Six are $89.94. A house that just bought a row of new Pro phones, and nothing else, can beat per-phone AppleCare+ without ever touching Individual. A house that only needed two phones cannot.
Six Theft Claims Have to Cover the House
Apple’s own product page splits the two clocks. Accident repairs are unlimited, with a fee per visit. Theft and loss are not. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss allows two of those claims per 12 months on the covered iPhone, iPad, or Watch. Individual allows three across every enrolled phone, tablet, and watch on that one account. Family allows six theft and loss claims across every eligible iPhone, iPad, and Watch in the group.
THE CLAIM CLOCKS
- Accident repairs: Unlimited on all three plans, with a service fee each time.
- AppleCare+ theft and loss: Two claims per 12 months on that one device.
- Individual theft and loss: Three claims per 12 months for one account.
- Family theft and loss: Six claims per 12 months for up to six people.
A six-person group that actually uses all six slots gets one theft claim per person per year. That is thinner per head than Individual’s three claims for a single owner, and thinner than two claims on each phone if the family had kept separate AppleCare+ plans. The pooled cap does not grow when a seventh iPhone or a tenth iPad joins. Hardware can pile up. The six-claim bucket does not.
People who break phones a lot still get unlimited screen and drop work. People who lose phones, or have kids who do, are sharing a small pot. For a family that files one lost-phone claim a year, six is plenty. For a family that files three, the fourth, fifth, and sixth have to last the rest of the rolling year, for every person in the group.
Kids’ iPads Age Out After Four Years
Family does not cover “every Apple thing in the house.” It covers eligible Apple things. Recently purchased products and devices still on AppleCare+ can move over. Other hardware has to be associated with an Apple Account in the group, in good condition (Apple may run a diagnostic on an iPhone or iPad, or inspect it in a store), and four years old or newer. Headphones and AirPods have to be one year old or newer.
That four-year line is a quiet cut. Older AppleCare+ monthly plans could be kept going on a device a child had used for years. An iPad bought in 2021 is outside Family in 2026, even if it still works and even if it is the tablet a kid actually drops. A Mac that outlasts the laptop cycle the same way is out too. The household can keep paying Individual or per-device AppleCare+ on the old unit, or live without cover, but it cannot hide that slab inside the $49.99 umbrella.
WHO THE PLAN LEAVES SHORT
- One-account owners: Individual is cheaper through eight devices, at $49.94 versus $49.99.
- Two-person homes: Two Individual plans are $39.98, $10.01 below Family, if each person stays inside three devices.
- Long-held iPads and Macs: Hardware older than four years, and headphones older than one year, never join.
- Theft-heavy houses: Six shared loss claims can be tighter than two claims on each phone.
- Buyers outside the United States: Apple has posted Family as a U.S. option; Individual already sells in the U.K.
Apple brought AppleCare One to the United Kingdom on August 4, 2026, at £16.99 a month for three products and £4.99 per extra device. Family is not on that page. Anyone shopping from another country is still on Individual, or on classic AppleCare+, until Apple says otherwise.
Apple Built This Path With AppleCare One
On July 23, 2025, Apple introduced AppleCare One as a single monthly plan for several products, with theft and loss extended from iPhone to iPad and Watch. Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, framed it as the same AppleCare+ stack on a simpler bill.
Built on the trusted foundation of AppleCare+, AppleCare One extends that same reliability and makes it easier than ever to protect the products you love and depend on like iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, combining simplicity and exceptional value.

The 2025 plan also opened a door AppleCare+ had kept shut: devices already in a drawer, up to four years old and in good condition, could be enrolled after a check. Pricing did not change with the mix. Apple said a customer covering an iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch could save up to $11 a month against separate AppleCare+ plans. Extra units were $5.99 each. Trade-ins swapped cover onto the new device.
HOW THE PLANS STACKED UP
- July 23, 2025: Apple announces AppleCare One at $19.99 a month for three products, $5.99 per extra device.
- July 24, 2025: U.S. customers can sign up on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or in an Apple Store.
- August 4, 2026: AppleCare One opens in the United Kingdom at £16.99 a month for three products.
- September 9, 2026: Apple announces AppleCare One Family for U.S. Family Sharing groups.
- September 14, 2026: Family goes on sale at $49.99 a month.
Family is that 2025 idea stretched across accounts. Individual still cannot see another person’s hardware. Family can, as long as those people sit in the same Sharing group. The annual outlay is $599.88 if you never cancel, against $239.88 for a three-device Individual plan before add-ons. You are paying for the other people’s phones, not for a fancier repair.
No Extra Monthly Fee on a New iPhone
Family’s other lever is automatic enrollment. A new Apple product billed to someone in the group is added at no extra monthly charge. The $49.99 rate does not move when the box count does. That is the feature that makes a $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro, a $1,299 iPhone 18 Pro Max, or a $1,999 iPhone Duo cheap to insure on the margin, once the household is already on Family. The first month is still $49.99. The foldable does not add $14.99 of its own.
If a device already has AppleCare+, Apple Support says an upgrade to AppleCare One cancels the old plan and refunds a share of the unused term. That matters in September, when a lot of U.S. buyers will be standing in checkout with a new Pro phone and an old plus-plan still ticking. Moving the whole group in one step is cleaner than stacking another $14.99 on the new handset and leaving the kids on separate bills.
It is also how Apple keeps the meter running. Cancel Family and every auto-added device goes dark together. Pull one iPad out of the plan and that iPad is uncovered the same day. The subscription is the cover. There is no leftover two-year certificate sitting in a drawer.
What a Cracked Screen Still Costs
The monthly price is not the repair price. Apple publishes a separate fee sheet for AppleCare+, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, and AppleCare One, and Family uses the same numbers. iPhone screen repairs still cost $29, including back glass. Other iPhone accidents, including liquid, are $99. A lost or stolen iPhone is $149. Those fees land on every visit, and they do not shrink because six people share one bill.
FEES THAT STILL HIT EACH CLAIM
| Product | Accidental damage | Theft and loss |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | $29 screen or back glass; $99 other | $149 |
| Apple Watch | $69, or $79 for Ultra and Hermès | $119 |
| iPad | $29 screen or accessory; $49 other, or $99 on Air, Pro, iPad (A16), and iPad mini (A17 Pro) | $129 |
| AirPods and Beats | $29 | Not covered |
| Mac (most models) | $99 screen or enclosure; $299 other | Not covered |
| MacBook Neo | $49 screen or enclosure; $149 other | Not covered |
| Apple Vision Pro | $29 included accessories; $299 other | Not covered |
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission tells shoppers to add those per-visit charges when they weigh deductibles you pay on each repair against the monthly cost of a service contract. Family does not erase that arithmetic. A household that files two iPhone screen jobs and one lost-phone claim in a year still writes checks for $29, $29, and $149 on top of $599.88 in subscription fees.
Standalone iPhone AppleCare+ starts at $10.99 a month on Apple’s plan page, with theft and loss up to twice in 12 months. That floor is the right product for one careful phone. Family is the right product for a U.S. Sharing group that already burns three Individual bills, or that is about to drop several new iPhones into the same house and does not want a $14.99 rider on each of them. Signup opens September 14 in Settings, or through Apple’s coverage site, for groups that already have Family Sharing turned on.
