City’s £125m Enzo Deal Caps a £327m Midfield Rebuild

Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for £125 million ($169 million), matching the British transfer record. The Argentina midfielder is on a five-year contract, with the deal confirmed 30 minutes after the window shut at 23:00 BST on Tuesday, 1 September.

The fee is the last piece of a £327 million midfield rebuild. Chelsea took the cash, then watched Monaco tear up a written deal for the man meant to replace him.

A £327m Midfield in One Window

City did not buy one expensive passer. They rebuilt the middle of the pitch after Rodri left for Barcelona, Bernardo Silva joined Real Madrid on a free, and Nico González was sold to Newcastle, with Tijjani Reijnders also moving on. Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, a fixed fee with no add-ons. Ayyoub Bouaddi followed from Lille for £86 million at 18. Fernández, 25, completes the trio on a five-year contract until 2031.

CITY’S MIDFIELD OUTLAY THIS SUMMER

Director of football Hugo Viana called him “a complete midfielder: technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer,” and said City “feel very strongly he will improve our team.” Fernández has played in two World Cup finals, won the 2022 tournament, and finished this summer as a runner-up with Argentina after a 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain, a final he left early on a second yellow card.

He thanked Viana, head coach Enzo Maresca, and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in the same breath. The reunion with Maresca is the part of the deal that had been sitting in plain sight since January.

Chelsea Got the Fee They Wanted

Chelsea had told clubs in late May that the price was £120 million and set 14 August as the last day for bids. That date came and went with Fernández still in a Chelsea shirt and still pushing to leave. City came back in the final 48 hours. The clubs settled at £125 million, £5 million above the figure Chelsea had named in the spring, matching the sum Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak in September 2025.

He is the first player sold for more than £100 million twice. Chelsea signed him from Benfica in January 2023 for £106.8 million, then a British record, and will clear a profit of about £18 million. They could have unwound the City sale when the Camara move collapsed. They did not. A short club note confirmed the exit and stopped there.

Fernández had wanted Real Madrid earlier in the year. By deadline day he wanted City, and Chelsea, having held out for a huge fixed fee, took it. Jamie Carragher said the move makes City “the biggest challenger to Arsenal now,” after a season in which City finished second, seven points back.

Why the Camara Deal Died After 11pm

Chelsea had a written club-to-club deal with Monaco for Lamine Camara at £47.1 million, a six-year contract with an extra-year option, and a medical already done in France. Shortly after 23:00 BST, Monaco told them in writing that the sale was off. Chelsea called that “deeply unprofessional.” The Senegal midfielder, 22, with 37 caps, is staying put.

Monaco did not want to sell two senior players on the same night. Folarin Balogun, 25, was the preferred sale, a move to Everton worth about £40 million until a medical problem landed in the afternoon. That wobble is what opened the door to Camara after Chelsea had already been turned down at £38.1 million earlier in the day. When Everton came back with a reworked Balogun offer, lower up front and heavier on add-ons, Monaco shut Camara down. After midnight, Balogun walked away from Finch Farm without signing.

HOW TUESDAY NIGHT UNRAVELLED

1. 1 September, afternoon: Camara completes a medical in France. Balogun’s Everton medical hits a snag, and Monaco lowers the Camara ask.
2. 1 September, evening: Chelsea have a written £47.1 million deal. City and Chelsea settle Fernández at £125 million. Camara is due in London on Wednesday.
3. 1 September, 21:00 BST: City announce Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.
4. 1 September, 23:00 BST: The Premier League window shuts. Monaco refuse to complete Camara and later confirm the pull-out in writing.
5. 1 September, 23:30 BST: City confirm Fernández. Chelsea do not cancel the sale.
6. 2 September, after midnight: Balogun rejects Everton. Monaco have sold neither player.

A Premier League club can buy two extra hours after a deal sheet if the sheet lands between 21:00 and 23:00, pushing paperwork to 01:00. That grace is for domestic files. An overseas move still has to clear FIFA’s Transfer Matching System by midnight, which is the rail Camara’s transfer had to run on. Monaco never signed the last sheet. There is no way to reopen it now.

Maresca’s January Exit Opened the Door

Maresca resigned from Chelsea at the end of December 2025 and left on 1 January. City later confirmed confidential talks while he coached Chelsea in autumn and winter 2025, about a return if Pep Guardiola stepped aside. Chelsea said they “felt let down” because they believed “his head and heart were focused on another club,” and that they accepted the resignation to protect the squad. City and Chelsea struck a settlement that included compensation to Chelsea. Maresca paid a separate settlement of his own.

Fernández had been Maresca’s unofficial vice-captain. He grew cold on Chelsea after that split, spoke out following the Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain in March, and was banned for two games. City opened talks on Monday night and were not put off by Chelsea’s old £120 million deadline. The player on the page is a 25-year-old World Cup midfielder. The deal that actually moved is a coach collecting a footballer whose relationship with his old club broke when he walked out.

What Chelsea Lost in 170 Appearances

Chelsea’s own note lists 170 appearances and 31 goals, plus the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. That is the whole west London ledger in one cold paragraph. Last season he scored 15 times and added seven assists in 54 games across all competitions, second in the club’s scoring chart behind João Pedro. He has 49 caps and eight international goals.

He reported back after the World Cup and still started the campaign on the bench. Alonso, now in the Chelsea job, decided a sale served the club. There was a view inside the building that the unofficial vice-captain had not looked like vice-captain material. Chelsea still made in the region of £500 million from loans and sales this summer, and closed the window by selling Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig for £16 million and loaning Dário Essugo to Strasbourg, Robert Sánchez to Como, and Mykhailo Mudryk to Tottenham, with Tosin Adarabioyo joining Spurs on a permanent deal. The Camara collapse did not reverse any of that.

He also said he trains hard every day and “can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.” The Stamford Bridge crowd had already turned in pre-season, so the cost of keeping a restless senior midfielder was on the books before the invoice went out.

Everton Lost Ndiaye and Never Landed Balogun

The same night City paid up to £65 million for Iliman Ndiaye, a £60 million base plus £5 million in add-ons, on a five-year deal. The 26-year-old Senegal forward, with 44 caps, scored 17 goals in two years at Everton after arriving from Marseille. He said, “I’ve worked my whole life for an opportunity like this.” City had seen an offer of up to £80 million for Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo knocked back on Monday and moved for Ndiaye instead.

Jack Grealish went the other way on a season-long loan that covers the last year of his City contract. Everton had already sold Beto to Fiorentina and then watched Balogun leave their training ground unsigned, after also failing to land Joshua Zirkzee or Tammy Abraham on loan. That leaves Thierno Barry as the one recognised centre-forward on David Moyes’s books for the first half of the season, plus a late arrival in Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon.

City’s Ndiaye purchase sat inside that scramble. Everton needed a striker because they had just sold two. Monaco needed one big sale and preferred Balogun. When that medical wobbled they opened Camara, then slammed it shut when Balogun flickered back to life, then lost Balogun anyway. Chelsea had already signed off Fernández on the assumption Camara was coming. City collected a record midfielder and a wide forward on the same day, and the knock-on from the Ndiaye fee helped scramble the one deal Chelsea needed to make the Enzo sale look clean.

Catching Arsenal Starts This Week

City finished last season seven points behind Arsenal. The midfield that will try to close that gap now costs £327 million in one window and still has to become a team, with Anderson, Bouaddi, and Fernández yet to play a Premier League minute together. Fernández has one Chelsea appearance this season and a World Cup in his legs. Viana’s line is that he can play a possession game and a counter, which is the brief Maresca has been handed in the post-Guardiola job.

Chelsea go into the same week with Moisés Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and Reece James as the midfield core, Caicedo carrying a knock from a 4-3 win over Brighton, plus new pieces in Valentín Barco and Jordan Henderson. Andrey Santos had already been sold to Manchester United. The player they had in writing at £47.1 million is back in Ligue 1. The player they sold for £125 million is in a sky-blue shirt.

Fernández told City he wants to repay the faith “as soon as possible.” Chelsea’s public thanks ran to a single sentence. On Wednesday morning the record fee was banked, the replacement was not, and the midfield City spent all summer building was finally on the books.
