Sony Cuts Jim Thornton Out of Taped Wheel of Fortune

Sony Pictures Television is cutting Jim Thornton’s voice from a month of taped Wheel of Fortune episodes before the September 14 premiere. The studio suspended the 61-year-old announcer on September 1 and said it is recasting the job while it reviews allegations it has not described.

A month of Season 44 was already shot with him on the mic. Producers are replacing those cues rather than moving the date.

A Month of Season 44 Is Already in the Can

People with knowledge of the production called the edit a “major undertaking.” Thornton has been the show’s announcer since 2011, on more than 2,200 episodes, and he was in the booth for the first block of the new season. That tape was meant to start airing on September 14. It is now being rebuilt around a voice that has not been named.

The September 1 episode that went out the night Sony confirmed the suspension still carried him, because it had been shot earlier. Households heard a man the studio had already pulled.

THE SEASON 44 TAPE

Syndication does not work like a streaming drop you can slide by a week. Stations have the premiere on the books, and the first month of the season is supposed to arrive as a finished package. Pulling the announcer after those shows exist means going back into audio that was recorded live against picture, prize reels, and credit rolls, then laying a new voice in time for September 14, which is 13 days after the suspension was announced.

The Voice Lives in a Dark Booth Beside the Stage

Thornton is almost never on camera. That is why the recut looks, from the outside, like a small job. It is not. He works from a booth off the floor at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, and the track he cuts is the spine of each half-hour: the open, the prize reads, the credit liners, the bumps in and out of commercials.

My basic job is warming up the audiences. I make them laugh, hopefully, and have a lot of fun. It’s like a big birthday party, and then I go into my little room and start the show.

He has said contestants often do not know who he is until he speaks. “Then I come out, and they say, ‘Who is this guy?’” The work is still live. He reads scripts in the morning, matches prize copy to video, writes some of the closing liners himself, and paces them to the roll. In 2023 he even stepped in for Pat Sajak on a round because a contestant wanted to meet him. The face is optional. The voice is not.

WHAT THE ANNOUNCER TRACK CARRIES

• The open: He introduces the hosts and starts the show from the booth, not from a later voice-over session.
• Prize copy: He times trip and gift reads to the video on his monitor so the picture and the sentence land together.
• Credits: He writes some of the closing liners himself and rides the speed of the roll.
• The room: He warms the studio crowd off camera before the first cue, then disappears into the booth for five or six games in a day.

Swapping that track after the fact is closer to rebuilding the show’s clock than to changing a graphic. Every letter call, every “look at this,” every trip to a resort with a hard name has to be recut so a different mouth is selling the same prizes on tape that already exists.

What Sony Has Not Said About the Flight

Sony’s September 1 statement ran four sentences and named no conduct. “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” a studio spokesperson said. That is the entire public case from the company that makes the show.

Accounts of the review have tied it to a May 14 trip on American Airlines Flight 1276. A passenger raised concerns with a flight attendant. The pilot had law enforcement waiting at the gate at Los Angeles International Airport. Thornton was wearing a Wheel of Fortune jacket in a photo from the flight. Officers questioned him and sent him on his way.

His attorney, in a September 2 letter, said the announcer “did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime.” The same letter said law enforcement “spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go.” The lawyer also called an earlier write-up of the flight “defamatory,” and said a press inquiry about that trip is what prompted Sony’s review.

American Airlines confirmed the police meeting without naming anyone. “On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,” an airline spokesperson said.

WHAT WE KNOW

A company can pull talent while it looks into a claim. It is a harder sell to strip a month of finished tape when the only official words are “allegations” and a lawyer’s account of a five-minute talk at the gate.

The Syndication Clock Does Not Pause for an Inquiry

Wheel of Fortune is still the weeknight habit it has been for four decades, and the premiere date is part of that habit. Stations expect new games on September 14. Reruns are filling the gap until then. A delay would punch a hole in access periods that local stations have already sold.

Sony’s own show page still sells the franchise on scale: more than $300 million in cash and prizes paid out, 7 Emmy Awards, and over 10,000 people auditioning each year. Those figures are why a booth job that most viewers never see is being treated like a host change. The show cannot go dark for a personnel review, and it cannot ship September 14 with a voice the studio has already taken off the lot.

Executive producer Bellamie Blackstone’s company is also feeding next-day streams. That only tightens the clock. A syndicated weeknight that also has to appear online the next day does not have spare inventory sitting on a shelf. The first month has to be clean enough to run, and it has to run on time.

Jim Thornton Took Over After Charlie O’Donnell Died

This is the second time in a generation the mic has changed hands, and the last time it was because someone died. Charlie O’Donnell had been the voice for more than 25 years when he died in November 2010 at 78. Thornton was among the guest announcers who tried out in 2010 and was hired for the 2011 season.

He came out of Los Angeles radio, including a long run at KNX 1070, and had already done a short stretch announcing The Price Is Right. He added ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune when that series launched in 2021. Ryan Seacrest joined Vanna White as host in September 2024 after Sajak’s retirement. Through all of that, the booth stayed the same.

O’Donnell’s exit left a hole the show filled with tryouts. Thornton’s exit is being filled in post. That is the difference a live booth makes when the tape is already in the vault and the premiere is not moving.

The New Announcer Still Has No Public Name

Sony has not introduced the replacement. The recast has been described as a step for the length of the review, not as a firing with a successor attached. The show’s own site still lists Thornton among its bios with White, Seacrest, and Blackstone. Until a name is on a credit roll, that page is as close as the production has come to saying who the voice of the show is.

He told Marshall he wanted the job from childhood. “This is what I’ve always wanted to do, from when I was a little boy, about 9 years old, in the basement with a microphone,” he said. The basement mic became a booth that also served as a dressing room, a monitor, and a stack of prize pages. That room is now the problem set for Season 44.

September 14 will still arrive on the weeknight grid. Someone else will open the show, read the trips, and ride the credits. Sony has not said who that person is, or whether Thornton’s booth goes back to him if the review ends the way his attorney says the night at LAX ended.
