Suntory has officially launched its highly anticipated collaboration between Boss Coffee and the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), bringing a limited-edition collection of themed cans to stores across Japan. Fans of both caffeine and collectible cards can now get their hands on one of 17 unique designs, each inspired by Pokémon TCG cards.
A Blend Inspired by Power
First announced in early January 2025, this collaboration isn’t just about slapping Pikachu on a coffee can. Suntory has taken inspiration from Pokémon “ex” cards—high-powered, ability-packed staples of the TCG—when crafting this special edition coffee. The concept mirrors the strength and endurance of the “ex” Pokémon, a fitting match for Boss Coffee’s image as a go-to drink for busy professionals and coffee lovers.
The collaboration spans multiple flavors, ensuring there’s something for every kind of coffee drinker:
- Rainbow Mountain Blend – A rich, full-bodied brew with balanced acidity.
- Luxury Low Sugar – Just the right touch of sweetness without being overpowering.
- Sugar-Free Black – A bold and intense option for those who love pure coffee flavor.
- Café au Lait – A smooth, creamy blend perfect for a gentler coffee experience.
Each can features a different Pokémon TCG design, turning everyday coffee breaks into mini collector’s hunts. With a price tag of around 154 JPY (less than $1), it’s an affordable way to mix coffee with nostalgia.
How to Win Exclusive Pokémon-Themed Prizes
Suntory isn’t stopping at just coffee cans. They’re giving fans the chance to win some unique Pokémon-themed prizes through two special campaigns running until June 1, 2025.
First, those who purchase a six-pack of the limited-edition Boss Coffee cans can enter a prize draw for a Fuecoco Boston jacket or a QUO gift card worth 1,500 JPY. The Fuecoco jacket, in particular, is expected to be a hot commodity among fans of the Fire-type starter Pokémon.
The second campaign is even easier to participate in. Simply scanning a code on the coffee can enters buyers into a draw for a Pokémon TCG-inspired cushion. With 1,500 winners set to be chosen, the odds aren’t terrible for those willing to stock up on some extra coffee.
A Collector’s Dream or Just Another Marketing Gimmick?
Limited-edition beverage collaborations have been booming in Japan, from Pokémon-themed instant ramen to Starbucks anime tie-ins. The question is: Will this Boss Coffee x Pokémon TCG collection be a must-have collector’s item or just another marketing stunt?
Early reactions suggest it’s leaning toward the former. The Pokémon TCG community is vast, and die-hard collectors have been known to chase after every variant, promo card, or themed product that hits the market. Combine that with Japan’s deep-rooted convenience store culture—where collectible drink cans and snack packaging regularly become fan obsessions—and it’s easy to see why these Boss Coffee cans might fly off the shelves.
Will This Collab Expand Beyond Japan?
While the collaboration is currently exclusive to Japan, the global reach of both Boss Coffee and Pokémon TCG means international fans are hoping for a wider release. Boss Coffee has been making a push in international markets, particularly in the U.S. and Australia, where it’s available in select stores and online retailers.
But given that previous Pokémon collaborations, including Japan-exclusive McDonald’s Happy Meal promos, often stay locked to the region, there’s no guarantee these cans will ever make it overseas. For now, international fans may have to rely on resellers or lucky travel opportunities to snag a set.
