Slack users across the U.S. found themselves unexpectedly disconnected Tuesday morning as widespread outages hit the popular workplace messaging platform. Reports flooded in about login failures, message delays, and unresponsive channels, leaving many teams scrambling for alternative ways to communicate.
Thousands Report Problems as Slack Goes Down
The trouble started around 10 a.m. ET when complaints on DownDetector, a service that tracks outages, began to spike. By 11:30 a.m., more than 3,000 users had reported issues, with many citing difficulties sending messages or staying connected.
For some, the outage was a mere inconvenience. For others, it threw their workflow into chaos. Slack is a critical tool for many businesses, and when it stops working, so does communication.
A breakdown of user complaints on DownDetector showed:
- 60% of issues were related to the Slack app itself
- 24% of problems stemmed from server connectivity
- 17% involved the website failing to load properly
Reports suggested the outage was widespread, affecting multiple major cities across the U.S. A live outage map showed higher concentrations of complaints on the East Coast, though disruptions were being felt nationwide.
Social Media Erupts With Frustration—and Jokes
When workplace tools go down, the internet notices. Many users took to social media to vent their frustrations—or celebrate an unexpected break.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) quipped:
“Slack is down. I haven’t felt peace like this in five years.”
Another likened the outage to a rare weather event:
“I grew up in the Bay Area, so Slack being down is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a snow day.”
Others, however, were less amused. With remote workforces heavily reliant on Slack, some teams had to revert to email or other communication apps to keep business moving.
Slack Responds, But No Fix Yet
Slack quickly acknowledged the issue, posting updates on its official status page. The company confirmed problems with multiple features, including:
- Sending messages
- Logging in
- Workflows
- Threads
- Other API-related functions
In a public statement, Slack reassured users:
“We’re still working to restore functionality to affected Slack features. Thank you for your continued patience as we continue investigating. We’ll be following up with further updates as they become available.”
The company also apologized on X, responding to frustrated users:
“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience. We’re working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
No Clear Timeline for Resolution
As of now, Slack has not provided an estimated time for full restoration. Engineers are actively working on the issue, but users remain in the dark about when normal service will resume.
For those still facing disruptions, Slack recommends checking its official status page for real-time updates. In the meantime, teams may need to rely on alternative communication methods—whether it’s Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, or, if all else fails, good old-fashioned email.
